HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
The Alabama Supreme Court denied a petition filed by former UA-Huntsville
professor, Amy Bishop Anderson's defense.
The defense filed a writ of mandamus asking the Madison County Circuit Court
to compel the state to pay expert witness fees prior to the conclusion of
Anderson's trial. Because Anderson was declared indigent, her lawyers are
seeking taxpayer-funded testing and expert witnesses to back up their insanity
defense.
The Alabama Supreme Court is refusing to make the state pay for mental
screenings and witnesses before the trial to help Anderson's defense because
they did not have enough materials from the lower court to rule on the
petition.
Anderson is charged with capital murder for the shooting deaths of three colleagues
during a Biology department meeting at the University of Alabama in Huntsville
in February, 2010.
