HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
Desiree Kiplinger of Huntsville is starting an outdoor hiking event for kids. She said she created Tike Hike because she loves the outdoors and believes children should learn at a young age to appreciate the wild.
She's teaching her daughter Kadence to love the outdoors now.
" Kadence absolutely loves the trails," said Kiplinger. "She's kicking and screaming when it's time to leave."
Desiree said these days kids are so tuned in to video games, they've forgotten how to play games outside like freeze tag or hide and seek. She said kids will learn through exploring on the trail at Monte Sano State park. Kids will learn about the different types of bugs, trees and plants. The hike usually ends with a coloring session at the Japanese Garden.
"It's so much more educational if you can get out there and do it hands on and actually get to touch and learn and feel things and see things and realize what does happen when you don't take care of things," said Desiree.
Desiree said she appreciates the outdoors now more than ever after visiting countries like China.
"They didn't conserve their natural resources and I didn't see any green. It was pretty much just desert and sand. It was sad. People don't really realize how great we have it here," she said.
