HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The federal government has several programs in place to help veterans like the Veterans Retraining Assistance Program. Unemployed veterans can benefit from the assistance and get the training they need to get back into the workforce.

VRAP was established through the VOW To Hire Heroes Act. It's designed to provide training for unemployed veterans between the ages of 35 and 60 who have anything other than a dishonorable discharge. To qualify, veterans can't be eligible for any other state or training program and attend an accredited school or college. VRAP will cover the cost of school up to 12 months under the Montgomery GI Bill-Active duty program.

Workers at the Alabama Career Center System said you can apply online or at the center. The program is limited to 45,000 participants from July 1, 2012 through September 30, 2012 and 54,000 participants from October 1, 2012 through March 31, 2012.

VA Outreach representative, Bob Gossett, said this could be life changing for those veterans who don't have assistance.

"There's that gap of veterans between the ages of 35 and 60, who are unemployed and just need some upgraded skills or certifications to help them become more competitive in the job market," said Gossett.

The career center will also help veterans with resume preparation, job search assistance.
