HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
A group of Huntsville-based lawyers filed a complaint against Linda Coats Thursday to have her disqualified from running in this November's election for Madison County District Judge.
Coats was selected among seven candidates last Saturday by Alabama's Republican Party to be the nominee for the judge seat after Chris Messervy was disqualified in the April 24th run-off election. Messervy failed to file a campaign finance report on time – ultimately filing the report on the day of the March primary – that led to his disqualification.
With no democrat running against her for district judge this November, Coats had been nominated by the Alabama GOP and had all but secured her win for the seat.
The complaint, filed by lawyers Bill Hall, Amy Slayden, Dinah Rhodes, Amy Creech and Brent Deal alleges Coats failed to file two disclosure statements – a statement of economic interest and a disclosure statement of financial interests – within the 10-day period of when a candidate qualifies.
In the complaint against Coats, the "failure to file" disclosure is credited as calling for Coats' disqualification, the same disclosure filed against Messervy that led to his disqualification.
Linda Coats could not be reached Thursday night for comment on the complaint.
