HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
A local group is raising awareness about the problem of illiteracy.
United Way hosted its first regional literacy meeting on Wednesday.
The purpose of the meeting is to bring various sources together to address the issue.
Organizers said illiteracy has an impact on the community. It's also an economic issue.
"It costs the state a tremendous amount of dollars to take care of those who are not literate, not functionally literate, and it really keeps people from progressing - whether it's through the work force or even a healthy family," said Johnny Aycock with the Alabama Literacy Alliance.
Aycock said the group wants to make literacy a top priority in the state.
