DEKALB COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -
Plans are
moving forward in DeKalb County to build six storm shelters.
EMA
officials said a judge dismissed a suit last week regarding the shelters and
asked the community commission Tuesday to move forward with the project.
The storm
shelters have been in limbo since February. Plans were underway in 2011 to put
the shelters in Powell, Henagar, Sylvania, Shiloh, Fyffe and Geraldine, but
those plans came to a halt in December when bids were opened.
EMA
Director Anthony Clifton said there was a disagreement between two state
agencies relating to jurisdiction, and a contractor who failed to get the low
bid filed a law suit.
Clifton said the issue was resolved and the case was dismissed. He said he
asked the community commission to move forward with the project.
"It
clears our way to go ahead and they can actually begin their in kind projects,"
he said. "They can begin clearing land; they can start the foundation work if
they so choose. It gives us hopefully a
relatively short time frame in which to act."
Clifton
said the projects will soon go back out to bid. The goal will be to have them
built by the fall.
