How well do you know the inner workings of the internet? Do you track your kids online or do they hide things from prying eyes?
There are several tools and tricks out there that can help make sure you know exactly what your child is watching, reading, or hiding from you.
"I wouldn't discourage kids from coming in here and trying to figure out the computer or explore the internet," said computer expert Daniel Horton.
He recommends having an open discussion with a child before purchasing any tracking software. If that doesn't work and you want to take it a step further, try tracking the traffic coming through your wireless router.
"Most people are using a wireless router in their house now," said Horton. "Nine out of ten routers are going to have a setting where you can go in and actually see the traffic that's coming through it."
If that's too high-tech for you, try this instead.
"Mac or PC have parental controls," said Horton. "You can go in and you can set up a separate account for your child and give it specific lists of controls."
Password protection is important, but having a password only a parent knows is a must. Create a password with random symbols, letters, and numbers so kids can't guess it.
