DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -
The Alabama Coalition for Immigrant Justice held a vigil in Decatur Sunday to show support for Arizona's stance against its immigration law.
Supporters gathered at La Guerrerense market in Decatur for the vigil, while similar vigils were held across Alabama from Mobile to Russellville.
Families and supporters recited prayers and sang songs before lighting candles for the vigil.
Members of the NAACP also joined the vigil, saying they will continue to show support for the immigrant community.
"It's important for us now to stick together to fight immigration laws that are contradictory to what we think is good order," said Bernard Simelton, president of the NAACP Alabama Conference.
Simelton echoed the sentiment of many organizers who said immigration enforcement should be at the federal level.
"The question is, what should we do about it? Is it a state problem or is it a federal problem? And we think it's a federal problem," Simelton said.
Coalition groups are watching what the Supreme Court decides on Arizona, saying it could impact the immigration law in Alabama.
"It's a show of unity to show Arizona that we are here for you. We are united. We are standing here in solidarity," said vigil organizer Rosa Calderon.
