KILPATRICK, AL (WAFF) -
DeKalb County officials charged a man with firing a gun into an occupied dwelling.
Investigators said Jose Amaya was shot in the chest May 27 during a struggle with his sister. They said during the struggle, his sister grabbed Amaya's wrists to keep the gun pointed away. The gun discharged and struck him in the chest.
Amaya was transported to Huntsville Hospital where he made a full recovery.
After further investigation, a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was arrested June 21 without incident.
"I'm pleased to have this matter resolved because this is not the first time that my deputies have responded to shots being fired at that residence," said Sheriff Jimmy Harris. "We are concerned any time we have gunshots in a residential community because once a gun is fired you cannot take the bullet back or change its direction of travel. Many young children reside in the immediate area along with innocent adults. I feel that the Kilpatrick area is a little safer now due to this arrest being made."
