HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Starting Monday, Huntsville Police Captain Sherry Jackson will have a new title - Deputy Chief Jackson.

Jackson will become the first female to hold this position.

Her responsibilities will be to oversee support services roles, including communications, fiscal management, and the police academy.

She said when it comes to the academy, she plans to give officers more opportunities.

"I really want to expand our police academy and make more training available to our officers and local officers from other agencies," she said. "I'd like to turn our academy into like a college, where you pick classes and you can go if you choose, on top of the required classes; give a little bit more opportunity for officers to expand."

Jackson has been with the Huntsville Police Department for 28 years.

Her promotional ceremony will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the city council chambers.
