LEE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -
A reporter for the Auburn Plainsman paper claimed Harvey Updyke admitted to him that he poisoned the trees at Toomer's Corner. The reporter claimed he even said he didn't do it alone.
The conversation allegedly took place Tuesday outside the courtroom and out of earshot of Updyke's attorney. The reporter even said Updyke said his attorney would kill him if he knew he was talking to him.
Updyke's attorney, Everette Wess, said his client denies making any statements to anyone.
Wess said he finds it extremely suspicious that with all the sophisticated media present at the trial that his client would give that kind of statement to a campus newspaper.
He said there is no recording of the alleged statements, just the reporter's word.
Wess said there were statements also attributed to Harvey Updyke's wife.
He said when he questioned her, she also denied making any statements.
