COLBERT COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -
After a Colbert County Judge ordered a mental evaluation in Ronald Weems' case, court documents reveal medical officials say the 34-year-old is competent to stand trial.
The report also gave a medical opinion as to what his mental state was the night he allegedly killed Amanda Taylor.
The doctor who performed Weems' mental evaluation said there is no reason to believe or no information that would suggest Weems was suffering from mental disease or defect the night Taylor was murdered.
According to the documents, the doctor said Weems demonstrated a mild type of bipolar disorder, an illness in which Weems said he had been on and off medication for over the last 10 years.
But the doctor said he is capable to stand trial and did not appear to be suffering from any mental illness the night Taylor was killed.
Investigators say Weems strangled Taylor in the basement of his home and then got help dismembering and hiding her body.
Weems is charged with murder.
Ashley Greenhill, Laurel Pruett, and Matthew Fox are charged with abuse of a corpse and hindering prosecution.
Weems, Pruett, and Greenhill are set to go to trial in August, while Fox is waiting to see if the judge will grant him youthful offender status.
