Crews work fatal wreck on Highway 72

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
Huntsville Police and rescue crews worked a fatal accident on Highway 72 Monday afternoon.

The crash happened in the westbound lane, just west of Brian Hill Road around 1 p.m.

Police said Rebekah Sanders was driving a blue Mitsubishi Gallant when she hit a bridge wall while traveling east on Highway 72 in the Limestone County section of Huntsville. The car went off the road, into a ditch where it hit more concrete before coming back onto the highway and hitting another car head-on.

The man driving the Mitsubishi, George Alan "Al" Roberts, died on the scene. Sanders was rushed to the hospital where she had surgery on her leg, but her injuries were not life-threatening.

Traffic in the westbound lane was slowed down as one lane was closed while crews worked the accident.
