DeKalb and Jackson County officials and US Marshals arrested
a sex offender with an outstanding warrant Thursday.
Officials said they traveled to County Road 126 in Jackson
County and arrested Willie Westmoreland of Pisgah.
Deputies said he had an outstanding warrant with the DeKalb
County Sheriff's Department for violating the Community Notification Act. The
act requires convicted sex offenders to register when they move residences.
Westmoreland was convicted of second degree sodomy in 2002.
"This is another example of how much more efficiently we can
work when we have cooperation between agencies," said Sheriff Jimmy Harris. "New
registration laws have made it easier to make sure convicted offenders aren't
where they're not supposed to be."
