HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
Huntsville City School's superintendent Dr. Casey Wardynski spoke out Thursday on a principal who wants his job back.
He said the decision to fire Dr. James Waters was based entirely on helping children learn. Wardynski said there was very little learning going on at Chapman Middle School while Waters was principal. Chapman Middle School was one of six most failing schools in the area.
Last month, the school board decided not to renew Waters' contract based on low performance. Wardynski said any weak schools in the system affect the entire district.
Wardynski said this is just one step in improving Chapman Middle School in the future.
"I owe it to those children and families and our community to make Chapman a great school. That principal had been there for a long time. And it wasn't going anywhere. That's not acceptable," said Wardynski.
Waters filed papers for a non-jury hearing to get his job back. The hearing is set for August 9.
