HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
People trying to scam homeowners out of hard-earned cash are posing as utility company workers and promising aid from President Barack Obama.
North Alabama Better Business Bureau officials said the scammers tell their victims President Obama is going to help them pay their utility bills through a new federal program. In reality, the scammers are the only ones benefiting from this fake handout.
The crooks pretend to work for the local utility company, either on the phone or going door to door. They tell residents they must collect some personal information, including utility and bank account information or social security numbers, in order to activate the program.
"We've already had calls in the past through grants being offered through supposedly an economic stimulus package by President Obama, so we know we've had similar types of calls," said Michele Mason, President and CEO of the North Alabama Better Business Bureau. "We just want to make sure people are aware there is something new going on and that if they get a call from someone claiming to be from their utility company or even a visit at their front door, and then that person starts asking for personal data, then they need to be aware that there's a red flag."
BBB officials said residents should never allow someone claiming to be from the utility company inside their home without checking identification and confirming the visit via phone with the company. If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to work for the utility company, hang up and call the customer service number listed on your monthly bill. Never give your personal or financial information to an unknown person.
