GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
Phone line thefts are back on the rise in Marshall County.
The latest incident happened just outside Guntersville. Areas around Boaz were hit hard last year.
Boaz Police Chief Terry Davis said the past six months have been fairly quiet, but that changed about two weeks ago.
The latest theft involved nearly a football field length of cables cut and stolen from poles around Lewis Mountain Road in Claysville.
In the last two weeks, deputies arrested two people who stole cable outside of Boaz and attempted to sell it to a local scrap yard. Phone line theft became very popular last year.
Local authorities said they're maintaining a lookout for phone line theft in the hopes that the recent thefts won't become a trend.
"Previously we had several instances of this type of crime," said Davis. "We haven't had any recently within the past couple of months. There were a few reported at the beginning of this year."
Officials with AT&T said the cost of replacing the stolen lines affects everyone.
