DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -
A Decatur business made a sizeable donation to the city of Decatur.
Daikin America presented city leaders with a $100,000 check to help fund a new amphitheater.
City Council member Gary Hammon proposed the plan for the new amphitheater to be built at Founders Park. Hammon said they're trying to keep the budget for it at $250,000.
Daikin's donation will cover 40 percent of the budget, and city leaders said it pushes up the potential time frame to get it built.
"I don't have the words for this," said Hammon. "It's just jaw-dropping. I thought we could get ten grand here, ten grand there. I'd be scratching around for money for the next couple of years. And this just really speeds up the process. We could conceivably have it before the next school year."
The city applied for a $50,000 grant which they would have to match. If the grant comes through, 80 percent of the budget would be covered, and Hammon said that would be enough to break ground on the project.
