HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
Huntsville City School principals may see a significant increase in incentive pay next school year.
Nearly $100,000 in incentive pay was written into the contract of 23 Huntsville City School principals.
The incentives were initiated by Superintendent Dr. Casey Wardynski. School board members said that it was something that should have been done years ago. Some of the principals are being transferred of hired in to challenging school systems with histories of low achievement and high numbers of low-income families.
The incentive pay was divided up between the 23 principals with some receiving more than $6,000 of the sum.
Some board members disagreed with the plan and said teacher salaries should have been addressed first but Wardynski defended the decision and said the schools needed to ensure strong leadership before they could work on teacher benefits.
Officials said they are not against teacher incentives but they more than likely wouldn't be feasible until the next school year.
A number of major financial decisions were made to get Huntsville City Schools out of a $19.5 million debt which included more than 400 layoffs, a number of budget cuts and the forgiveness of a $9 million loan.
