Giles County, TN (WAFF) -

A Giles County man was killed Thursday by a possible homemade explosive device.

Officials reported that sheriff's deputies were dispatched to a Minor Hill, Tennessee home. Crews found seventy-six year old Jerry Simpkins dead from an injury to the head. Investigators believed the wound to be from some form of homemade explosive.

Investigators determined that more explosives were likely in the area with unknown triggers. The area was blocked off and hazardous material units were called in.

After thorough investigation, the area was declared safe.

Simpkin's body was transferred to the medical examiner's office for an autopsy.

The case remains under investigation.
