Judge orders mental evaluation for Hammad Memon

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A Madison County judge issued an order for a mental evaluation Hammad Memon, the accused Discovery School Shooter. The District Attorney filed a motion late Friday asking for the mental evaluation.

Memon's attorney plans to use the insanity defense when this case goes to trial. This comes after Memon's arrest in Dallas. Police say the teenager and his mother, Safia Memon, were taken into custody with Pakistani passports and a large amount of cash. Investigators say Memon's parents were trying to get him out of the country before his trial. Iqbal and Safia Memon are charged with hindering prosecution. They are both out of jail on bond.

The order states that Memon will be examined by a state Forensic Examiner with the State of Alabama. The examiner will determine if Memon is competent to stand trial. The judge also wants to know Memon's mental status at the time of the shooting.

Memon is charged with the February 2010 murder of Todd Brown. Brown was shot and killed during a class change at Discovery Middle School. Memon is in the Metro jail without bond.
