More than 500 people attended Limestone County's Memorial Day Ceremony Monday afternoon. One veteran was the talk of the crowd after the ceremony.
A long line formed near 89-year-old World War II veteran Theo Calvin's seat. He spent several minutes shaking hands and taking pictures.
Calvin showed off the medals he earned almost seven decades ago while fighting in World War II, awards he has waited a very long time for.
"From time to time our army makes mistakes," said LTG Richard Formica. "I'm pleased to have the privilege to correct one of those mistakes."
The Army surprised Calvin with the Bronze Star and several other awards he never received after returning from Germany in 1945. Calvin never thought the day would come.
The Army isn't sure why it took nearly 70 years to admit the mistake, but Calvin said he is happy to finally see them pinned where they belong.
"That's what you call paying off a late debt," said Calvin.
The Bronze Star is the fourth-highest combat award of the U.S. Armed Forces.
