HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
The Huntsville City School board approved new hires in a special meeting Friday morning.
Three new ninth grade academic administrators will begin work at Butler, Lee, and Grissom High School.
Superintendent Dr. Casey Wardynski said the new positions are designed to help 9th graders transition into high school.
The board also approved a motion to authorize the school district's chief financial officer to hire additional audit support. The extra accountants and external auditors will oversee principal books and other financial records, according to Dr. Wardynski.
The decision stems for the nearly two dozen principals that will be transferred within the district.
Board members also approved an agreement with American Express to further implement better business practices within the district.
Dr. Wardynski said using the credit card for business transactions could bring up to $175,000 in cash-back for the district.
"Before, they were done on paper. It's very expensive to cut checks. This gets rid of that expenditure, provides better internal controls, and cash back," he said.
Friday morning's new hires contrasted with staff cuts that the school board announced earlier this week.
At least 121 probationary teachers were let go in the decision.
The shake-up within faculty was among other sweeping changes within the district over the past year.
They include improvements in the district's business practices and a technology overhaul that aims to equip every student with a computer in the upcoming school year.
The superintendent also said the school district is no longer stuck in a $20-million deficit. He projects the district will see a $7-million surplus by September.
Dr. Wardynski said the past year focused on "foundation laying" to better improve the students' education.
