The city of Athens is going green with their new vehicles.

Mayor Ronnie Marks demonstrated the city's new compressed natural gas filling station and car.

The city opted to purchase a CNG program to combat fuel costs and decrease dependency on foreign fuel.

"The compressed natural gas we are running about $1.40 a gallon," said Marks. "The beauty of what we are doing is to incorporate into our fleet management the big vehicles. We have a garbage truck ordered. The ones we have now run on diesel fuel they get four to five miles to the gallon at 3.90 a gallon."

The slow fill station will cost about $7,900. The new car is a 2012 Honda Civic that cost $26,000. The gas department paid for the station and the car.
