TUSCUMBIA, AL (WAFF) -
Some people might think of Sarah Thompson and her family as the modern day Brady bunch.
She and her husband have ten kids in all, but only seven still live at the house. Thompson takes care of all of the children including the three that don't biologically belong to her. One of the kids came to live with her when her eldest step daughter passed away, and two more kids came along when her sister died six years ago.
Thompson said, "She was a victim of addiction, depression and physical abuse and right after she passed away, I kind of felt led to work with women who have been through that same thing cause she fought it for a really long time."
Her loss led her to start an organization in her sister's honor called Sidney's Safe Foundation. Thompson, along with several volunteers, talk to other women in the community about the dangers of abuse and drug use. They also pitch in to deliver foods to needy families each week, do clothing drives and stuff back packs with food for kids who may have little to nothing to eat.
Thompson said there's so many people out there who need help, like her sister did.
"Just because Sidney's gone, she's lucky because she's in heaven cause she's not suffering those things anymore," said Thompson. "But the people here are still suffering, they need someone to pick them up and make them feel better about things."
The children also realized what having family means and don't take that for granted.
15 year old Madisen Thompson said having the other kids around changed her life.
"We're so fortunate to have everything that we have and then we see other kids that don't have what we have, and that makes me feel like we're really lucky."
