DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

Neighbors of a man arrested for the death of a Decatur woman spoke out Wednesday.

Mitchell Lindsey was charged with murder and robbery after he allegedly struck a woman's car during a chase.

Police said Lindsey stole a car and fled. He ran a stop sign on Cedar Street in Decatur and slammed into the vehicle of Bessie Stovall. She died at the scene.

Neighbors of Lindsey said they were shocked and saddened to hear the news.

"I guess everyone was all shocked, the same as I was. I couldn't believe it," said one of the neighbors.

However, they said they were not surprised to hear of Lindsey's arrest.

"There was times I saw the parents giving him and others alcohol in the front yard," said a neighbor.

Lindsey has a lengthy criminal history. He had multiple convictions just in the last few years. In Morgan County alone, Lindsey had four burglary convictions.

"I've known there were problems and I've been in touch with Decatur PD at least half a dozen times," said the neighbor.

Lindsey's grandmother said his arrest and actions have been very difficult.

"It's like a nightmare that you can't wake up from," she said.

Lindsey is currently being held in Morgan County Jail with no bond.
