DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -
Decatur City School
leaders met Tuesday to discuss staff contracts.
The superintendent made
a recommendation not to let a single employee go for the 2012-2013 school year.
That's a stark difference from 2011 where 65 employees were released.
Superintendent Sam
Houston said it was the significant cuts from last year that left them in a
position to renew all the contracts.
The Decatur City
Schools financial chief said that the severe cuts last year were due to
stimulus money running out.
Other valley school
systems have already announced cuts for the upcoming school year. Teachers that
work less than three years are often targeted because of tenure.
"If you do not receive
notice by that last working day of May, then you automatically know you get to
come back the next year. So, you automatically get a contact every year until
they tell you otherwise," said Beverly Sims with the Alabama Education
Association.
Board of Education
Members are also working out the school calendar to stay in step with the new
state law that recently passed.
