DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -
As of early Monday evening, murder suspect Mitchell Dillan Lindsey remained in the Decatur City Jail.
Investigators are sorting out some outstanding misdemeanor charges against Lindsey before transferring him to the Morgan County Jail.
Lindsey is charged with the murder of 68-year-old Bessie Louise Stovall.
Investigators said officers chased Lindsey Saturday afternoon after spotting him driving a car that had been reported stolen. They said the officers dropped back after Lindsey turned from Carridale Street onto Danville Road at a high rate of speed.
Another officer picked up the pursuit, but lost sight of the car. Investigators said Lindsey went through a stop sign at the intersection of Cedar Street and Spring Avenue, crashed into Stovall's car, sending the vehicle into a utility pole.
Officers apprehended Lindsey after a foot chase. Stovall died at the scene.
Stovall raised Shalyla Yarbrough from the time her granddaughter was born.
"She's the sweetest person I know. The most important person in my life," Yarbrough said Monday. "It still hasn't sunk in. As far as accepting it, I haven't accepted it fully. She's not gone. She's still here. We're going to do everything normal from here. She's still here. Physically, she's not here. We can't touch her or feel her, but she's still here."
Stovall leaves behind three adult children, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
A judge will set bond for Lindsey after he is processed at the Morgan County Jail.
