MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -
Alabama state school Superintendent Dr. Tommy Bice held a news conference Thursday to discuss the change in public school calendars.
The Marshall County School System was one district that participated in the video call Thursday morning.
Superintendent Tim Nabors said that although Marshall County schools had the opportunity to take more days off from the proposed school year, they had no choice but to agree to the terms of a 180-day school year. If they did not agree, the changes would require them to pay school staff for days they are not in session.
Like many school districts, Nabors said Thursday that he is concerned with lack of breaks in the new school calendar. Weather days, along with the annual fall break, were cut from the calendar.
Superintendent Nabors said he will also have to meet with officials from Boaz and Guntersville to create a school calendar for their shared alternative school. He planned to introduce that proposal to the Marshall County Board on May 21.
