MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -
USPS officials will announce what their plans are on consolidating Alabama
post offices.
Authorities intended to discuss the next steps to streamline the mail
processing network.
Postal officials recently announced they were going to cut employee hours
instead of closing 13,000 rural post offices. The move was made to save $500
million a year.
At least 500 offices have been closed already and another 400 were due to
close earlier this week. Officials will work on consolidating now.
Debra Fetterly, a USPS Spokesperson for the Alabama district, wrote a
statement regarding the changes.
"On Thursday the Postal Service will announce the next steps to
streamline its mail processing network. Prior to public release of any
additional information, our top priority, as is standard operating procedure,
is to ensure our employees are notified first. America needs a
financially-stable Postal Service to adapt to a changing marketplace and
evolving mailing needs. The steps we are taking now will put the Postal Service
on a strong financial footing for decades to come." wrote Fetterly.
