MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A controversial shooting range in two police jurisdictions in Marshall County remains closed, but both jurisdictions are seeking to pass opposing ordinances about their involvement in shooting ranges in their jurisdictions.

The Guntersville City Council met Tuesday night. Until then, Guntersville had no shooting range regulations in their police jurisdiction. Now they do.

And while the city of Albertville currently does have regulations, they are looking to get out of the shooting range business.

Tactical Shooters was shut down earlier this month due to a 1947 Albertville city ordinance that prevents operating a shooting range in the city's police jurisdiction without a license.

Tuesday night, the Guntersville City Council joined Albertville by passing an ordinance that prevents shooting ranges in the police jurisdiction but does not apply to residents who use their personal property for target practice or for hunting.

The range came under fire in recent months after residents said it was too loud.

"The biggest reason for that is we live in one of the most densely populated rural counties in this country and there's just not a good spot for an outdoor shooting range where it could operate and not impact or disturb neighbors," said Guntersville Mayor Bob Hembree.

But now the city of Albertville is considering removing language in their 1947 ordinance to where they would no longer have authority over shooting ranges in their police jurisdiction.

They're expected to take up that issue at their next council meeting on May 21.
