WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NY (RNN) - The wife of Robert Kennedy Jr. died of asphyxia from hanging, according to New York authorities.

The Westchester County Medical Examiner's Office has ruled Mary Richardson Kennedy's death a suicide from hanging. She was found in a barn outside the family home in Mount Kisco, NY, around 1:36 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

The New York Times reported authorities cut her down and tried to revive her but could not. She did, apparently, leave a note.

All four of the children she shared with Robert Kennedy Jr. were away; two of them were at boarding school and two were with their father, according to CNN.

The family of Mary Kennedy released a statement Wednesday:

"We deeply regret the death of our beloved sister Mary, whose radiant and creative spirit will be sorely missed by those who loved her. Our heart goes out to her children who she loved without reservation."

Mary and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. were married in 1994, but were in the midst of a divorce at the time of her death. She had been an accomplished architect during her life, but struggled with drugs and alcohol problems for years, and was said to have had a difficult time dealing with the failure of their marriage.

Robert Kennedy Jr.'s family praised her as a "genius at friendship, a tremendously gifted architect and a pioneer and relentless advocate of green design," the New York Times reported.

Three days after the couple filed for divorce in 2010 she was cited for suspicion of DUI. She later pleaded guilty to driving while impaired and was ordered to undergo rehab.

Some time later, she drove her car over a curb and charges she had been under the influence of drugs were dismissed when she says she was unaware her prescription medication could cause impaired driving.

Robert Kennedy Jr. is the son of former Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, D-MA, who served as U.S. Attorney General during his brother John F. Kennedy's administration. Robert Kennedy ran for president in 1968, but was shot to death immediately after winning the California primary.

Robert Kennedy Jr., is a successful environmental attorney, best known for his work with Riverkeeper.
