HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) - A new study shows that the Redstone Arsenal accounts for about 6% of Alabama's total gross domestic product in 2010.
The Huntsville Times reports that the study shows that the arsenal is responsible for about $11.47 billion and approximately 101,000 jobs throughout the region. Much of the impact is in Madison, Limestone, Lawrence and Morgan counties, where the arsenal accounts for $10.57 billion and 90,500 jobs.
The study was prepared for the chamber by the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs at the University of Illinois-Chicago.
The study also found that tax revenues generated through the arsenal, contractors and related business totals about $362 million.
University of Alabama-Huntsville economist Jeff Thompson says the study shows the arsenal is "extremely important to the state of Alabama's economy."
