Auburn softball travels to Lone Star State for Regional

The Auburn softball team earned the program's fifth consecutive NCAA Regional bid with a trip to Austin, Texas  to play the Houston Cougars on Friday, May 18, on the campus of the University of Texas. Game time is yet to be determined.

"We are excited to have the opportunity to play in a very challenging Regional," Auburn head coach Tina Deese said. "Houston is a good team that made it to Super Regional last season, so they know what it takes this time of year. We have a lot to prepare for and we are looking forward to it."

The Tigers are appearing in NCAA Regional play for the ninth time in program history. The fifth-consecutive trip to NCAA Regionals is a program record.

Auburn finished the 2012 season with a 33-21 overall record. The Tigers finished third in the Southeastern Conference Western Division, seventh in the league overall, with a 12-16 record. Auburn was eliminated from the SEC Tournament with a 2-1 loss in the first round to No. 5 Tennessee.

The Longhorns will serve as the host school for the Austin Regional and will take on Northwestern from the Big 10 in the top half of the bracket.  Texas is the No. 6 national seed and posted a 42-10 record this season. Northwestern went 27-27 in 2012.

Auburn has never played Houston or Texas, but has played Northwestern once. Auburn lost to the Wildcats, 6-1, in 2003.

The Austin Regional runs May 18-20 and is a double-elimination format.
