COLBERT COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -
There was a big cocaine bust in the Shoals.
Officers found just over a half a pound of cocaine during a traffic stop in Colbert County.
Agents with the ABC Board said they seized 8.2 ounces of cocaine, which is eight times the legal amount to be charged with trafficking and has an estimated street value of $28,000.
Officers said a man was pulled over for running a stop sign on River Road.
When the agent got to the car, he noticed the passenger trying to conceal a bag.
The man, later identified as Michael Whiteside, tried to run, but the officer tased him three times before taking him into custody.
Since the drugs were on Whiteside and not found in the car, the driver was ticketed for traffic violations and released.
Officers with the ABC Board said a seizure like this is very rare, but they are working closely with local agencies to clean the streets.
"It's a big community effort. The Sheriff Department responded. They helped transport the gentleman. We had to take him to the ER for medical treatment to make sure he was okay from the taser deployment. We're out there. We're working with everybody even when you don't see us, but we're all out there working together," said Lt. Gene Schrieber with the ABC Board.
Whiteside is being held at the Colbert County Detention Center on trafficking charges as well as suspended charges for a previous drug conviction also in Colbert County.
