MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -
The U.S. Postal Service backed off a previous plan to close 13,000
rural post offices.
Instead, the USPS will cut hours at the facilities in an effort to
save $500 million a year. The move was in response to a backlash against the
massive closures.
The chief operating officer said they are looking at other options
as well. One would be partnering with businesses in the rural areas.
"A corner
store or a gas station can provide basic mailing and shipping services," said
Megan Brennan, chief operating officer. "These stores would be open longer
hours and on weekends. It would also
help generate revenue and foot traffic for the business."
The agency plans to force thousands of full time employees to go
part time. The postal service must now get regulatory approval for the new plan
which could take several months.
