HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
Governor Bentley sent the school calendar bill back to the Alabama Legislature where it was overridden by the House.
It included an executive amendment that increases flexibility for local school systems.
It would have given school leaders the choice of opting out of new school calendar if it's not in the best interest of the student. But it also allowed schools to enjoy the flexibility measures detailed in the bill.
Governor Bentley's office released a quote saying, "Governor Bentley believes we should
provide public school systems more flexibility, not less. The governor
stands behind his executive amendment as an effort to protect flexibility for
school systems and to protect their freedom to set school calendars based on
the needs of the people they serve. Many systems had already set their
calendars for the upcoming year, and we believe their decisions and plans
should be respected. We encourage members of the Senate to consider the
needs of school systems and their students as this issue moves forward."
The Madison County School board discussed the school calendar Tuesday night.
Madison County School Superintendent Dr. David Copeland said if they have to make changes they will work with families that have scheduled trips.
