SYLVANIA, AL (WAFF) -
Sylvania city council members unanimously voted to return the Bible
verse to the city welcome signs Tuesday.
Two weeks ago the Ephesians Bible verse; One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism
was removed from the town's welcome signs.
Former Mayor Mitchell Dendy said they received a letter from the Freedom
From Religion Foundation saying it was unconstitutional.
Dendy said the decision was made to remove the language because the town
couldn't afford a big legal battle, but city council overturned
that decision.
Councilman Tony Goolesby said the former mayor never informed the council of
the letter or the decision. Goolesby said he's received numerous calls
from citizens asking the signs be restored with the bible verse.
Also residents along Dendy road, named for the disgraced mayor, are planning
to ask that their roads name be changed.
