Wilson Park evacuated for bomb scare

FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

The bomb squad was called to Wilson Park Tuesday afternoon to inspect a suspicious bag.

The park was evacuated and a perimeter was set up.

Bomb squad members manually tethered the backpack into the bomb cylinder because the robot was not functioning.

It took them about an hour to dispose of the suspicious bag.

They sealed the container and cleared the area. Police say there were wiring, and I-POD and other organic materials in the bag.

They say the materials were not explosive and don't believe they were intentionally left to cause harm.

They have received reports that someone was seen dropping the bag in the park and taking off.

They are following up on those leads at this time and the investigation is ongoing.
