SYLVANIA, AL (WAFF) -

The Sylvania City Council announced Tuesday night an open vacancy for the town's mayor position.

The council is looking at filling the vacancy left behind after former mayor Mitchell Dendy resigned.

Dendy resigned the week after he was fired as chief jailer of the DeKalb County Sheriff's Department.

Sheriff Jimmy Harris said he fired Dendy due to violations of policy regarding sexual harassment.

The council has 60 days to appoint a new mayor who will serve until September 30. If the council does not appoint someone, the governor will have 30 days to find a replacement.
