HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The 2012 Captial One Academic All-District Softball Teams selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America have been released, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville was represented by Mary Kelley and Whitney Toler as both have excelled on the field and in the classroom.
The pair was selected to the team from District 5 which is comprised of institutions from the Gulf South Conference, Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and the Sunshine State Conference. Traditional powers UAH and Valdosta State were the only schools from the GSC to have players selected.
Toler owns a 3.44 GPA in education, while Kelley boasts a 3.34 GPA in biology, and both were important parts of a team that just recently concluded its campaign with a 10th-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Kelley, a sophomore utility player, finished the season atop the GSC in doubles and currently ranks seventh in the nation in doubles per game. The sophomore also ranked among the best in the conference in several other categories as she was third in runs, RBI and total bases, while placing fourth in average and hits.
A sophomore pitcher, Toler put together a strong 19-8 record on the season on the strength of the league's fifth-best ERA – a 2.42 mark. She struck out 93 on the season, and she only walked 36 to lead the GSC in fewest walks issued.
The Academic All-District teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the first year of the expanded Academic All-America program as CoSIDA moves from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non Division I) and doubles the number of scholar-athletes honored. The teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
