HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville Police believe the shots fired into the U.S. Space and Rocket Center Thursday morning were fired from a moving vehicle on Interstate 565.

Police said three rounds were fired into the Davidson Center, which houses the Saturn V rocket just before 10 a.m. At least two bullets hit the rocket, causing only paint damage. Officials used a lift to view the damage and take pictures.

No one was injured in the shooting and the scene was secured.

Investigators said the shots were likely fired from Interstate 565 that runs next to the tourist attraction. They said the three rounds hit 30 to 100 feet apart, leading investigators to believe they were fired from a moving vehicle on the interstate.

According to police, the rounds were likely fired from a rifle, judging from the velocity needed to penetrate the building's glass. Huntsville Police found a bullet at the scene, but no casings.

NASA investigators are also involved in the investigation.

Several school groups were at the museum at the time of the shooting. Space and Rocket Center officials issued a letter to visitors about the incident.

J.C. Vaughn, owner of JC's Gun and Tackle Shop, said the rifle shot a long distance.  He's been around guns for years and has a theory on how the shots got into the landmark.

"Based on the angle it went into the building, it could have been someone who shot a round in the air and what goes up must come down, and it just happened to come down over there," Vaughn said.
