Despite the vocal opposition, all of the council members were in favor of annexing the five acres on the west side of Cloverdale Road.
Wal-Mart plans to build a store at the site. However, the property will have to be rezoned from residential to commercial before construction can begin.
Residents who oppose the plan have created a web site to save the historic Coffee Cemetery. Opponents said the cemetery will be destroyed if the big box store is built. People who live in the neighborhood have also voiced concern over their property values.
"It is in the hands of the city council and to voice your opinion you would need to contact your city council person and voice that opinion it is solely in their hands at this point," said Phil Stevenson, Florence spokesperson.
The council will reportedly vote on the rezoning at their next meeting on Tuesday, May 15 at 5:00 PM. Council meetings are held at 110 West College Street in Florence.
