MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - An international labor union and a Mexican labor lawyers group have filed a complaint challenging Alabama's immigration law under an international trade agreement.
The Service Employees International Union and Mexican National Association of Democratic Lawyers filed the complaint Monday, saying the state's immigration law violates sections of the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA.
The complaint alleges that the Alabama law violates international human rights and labor standards and undermines the ability of the federal government to enforce them. A spokeswoman for state Attorney General Luther Strange did not immediately return a call for comment.
The U.S. Supreme Court is considering whether to strike down or uphold a similar Arizona law. Justices on April 25 strongly suggested they may allow Arizona to enforce its immigration law.
