Baseball Lions end season with win over UAH

Chad Boughner picked his eighth straight win of the season and helped the University of North Alabama baseball team close its regular season on a winning note as the Lions downed Alabama-Huntsville 7-3. UNA was swept in a Gulf South Conference double-header Saturday by the Chargers  but rebounded to win the series finale and close the regular season at 36-14 overall and 15-9 in GSC play.

The Lions finish tied for second in the GSC standings but will be the No. 4 seed in the league tournament due to tie-breakers. UNA will play Valdosta State on Friday, May 4 in Rome, Game, at a time to be set by the league office.

With the win, Boughner collected his 10th win of the regular season and 25th of his career with the Lions, tying the UNA career make set by Ken Head from 1989-92. Boughner, a junior, has a 25-8 career record.

UAH took a 1-0 lead with a run in the first inning but UNA tied it in the fourth. J.P. LaMunyon doubled and scored on an RBI-single by Josh Carpenter. The Lions took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth with LaMunyon doubling again and then scoring on another Carpenter single.

The Chargers went on top 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth but UNA took the lead for good with a four-run seventh. Michael Schmidt singled and scored on a Jake Sloan RBI-single. Josh Cyr then homered. Carpenter singled and scored on an Andrew Almon double to make it 7-3. The Lions got their final run in the eighth when Schmidt reached on an error and Sloan singled him in.

Boughner (10-2) pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on eight hits over nine innings with four walks and 11 strikeouts.

Sloan, Carpenter and Almon had three hits each for the Lions and LaMunyon, Cyr and Schmidt had two each.
