The University of North Alabama softball team's 2012 season came to a close Saturday with a 1-0 loss to West Alabama in the Gulf South Conference Tournament. UWA pitcher Kristen Skinner scattered eight hits over seven shutout innings to keep the Tigers alive while UNA ends the year with a 20-26 record.
West Alabama (33-22) got its lone run in the bottom of the first inning. An RBI-single by Morgan Morrison drove in the game's only score.
UNA had its chances in the game after holding an 8-6 advantage in hits and getting another two base runners off UWA errors. All 10 runners, however, were stranded with only one reaching third base on the day.
The Lions' best chance came in the fifth inning when back-to-back singles by Julie Mercer and Callie Steadman gave the team a pair of base runners with one out. A ground out moved the runners to second and third before Skinner recorded the third out with a ground out to second base.
Mercer and Steadman each finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate. Singles by Shelby Goodman and Ali Barnette represented the Lions' only other hits on the day.
Haley Barnette took the loss in the pitching circle after walking four and striking out three in six innings of work. She closes out the season with an 8-14 record including three 1-0 losses on the year.
