HARVEST, AL (WAFF) -

Friday will mark the one year anniversary of the April 27 tornadoes, a time that brings back painful memories for many families.

Misty Cornwell was with her family when the storm hit her home.

"I remember trying to make sense of where we were because it didn't look the same," Cornwell said.

Cornwell's home on Orville Smith Road was completely destroyed.

The storm also took the lives of her 15-year-old daughter, Katelyn, who they called Katie, and her dad, Harold Fitzgerald, who they called Butch.

Cornwell said the family huddled together as the storm went through.

"We just kept saying over and over, ‘I love you, I love you,'" Cornwell said.  "It got so hard to hold on.  I remember letting go of Dad and Katie and hitting a tree.  It's something I think about every day.  I know I can't change it. But if I would have held on tighter, would it have made a difference?"

Now one year later, the family is trying to deal with the emotional memories again. The family said every day is a struggle, but they still try to find peace.

A memorial to remember Katie and Butch will be held Saturday from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at 811 Orville Smith Road in Harvest, AL.
