FORT PAYNE, AL (WAFF) -
The city of Fort Payne has agreed to sell an abandoned bakery building, eventually creating about one hundred new jobs.
For several years the old Sara Lee factory sat idle, but Friday morning the city council authorized the mayor to sell the property for $700,000.
In a special meeting called Friday morning, the council approved the mayor to move forward with the sale of the building to an unnamed plastics recycling company. Officials say the company plans to take untrimmed plastic from other companies, and then convert it to plastic pellets to be melted down and reused for other purposes.
"50, 75, 100 jobs - you know, it really helps our economy, helps our families, and you know we're just proud of any jobs we can get," said Mayor Bill Jordan of Fort Payne.
Jordan says the company plans to use just a portion of the building to begin, and then expand after that.
There is no word yet on when the company plans to begin production.
