LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -
Steve Modus and his son own and operate several 'Lil Steve's convenience stores in the Shoals.
A post the father wrote on their business' Facebook page said there are things their competition knows how to do that they don't.
The competition is in reference to stores owned by people who are Indian. The post pointed out an example saying, "I do not ride a camel."
Later, the post said that 'Lil Steve's keeps cigarette prices lower than the competition, followed by, "Yes, even Camel Cigarettes."
Modus said he only meant to acknowledge Indian-owned businesses receive financial help from the government and that American-owned retailers do not.
"Looking back, I would have left that part out. I would have left out anything that makes me look racist. I have nothing against my competitors. They have the right to be in business. The government set them up that way. We have a right to be in business the way the government sets us up. We pay taxes, they don't. But, I was is no way trying to stereotype them, and I apologize about that remark about the camels," he said.
Phone calls to the IRS to verify Modus' claim about Indian-owned stations were not returned, but look for an update on this story next week for more details.
