New state education bill makes its way to senate

MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A new state education budget is making it's way through the state legislature.

That new budget has less funding for K through 12 schools.

The senate finance and taxation-education committee voted today to approve a $5.5 billion education budget for the 2012-2013 school year. That's about $150 million less than this year's budget.

Russellville's Roger Bedford criticized the spending plan.

"We're seeing growth in Alabama but unfortunately we can't get that growth in the classroom because of the new way we're doing this budget."

The new budget is smaller because of a law enacted last year that limits how much can be spent in order to build up a reserve.
